Dokuz Eylül University (DEU)

DEU-DESUM has a long and proud history of being a hub of research and education in Turkey, particularly in the Aegean Region since its foundation in 1982. It is one of the largest universities of Turkey with 63.617 students from all over Turkey and 1.860 foreign students from 102 countries study. Though its distinguished position in Turkish Higher Education area, DEU-DESUM intends to foster its global presence in education and research and to become a key player in the global knowledge network. 

DEU-DESUM was selected as one of the 20 pilot universities by Turkish Higher Education Council (YÖK) in 2018 for implementing the internationalisation strategy and thus it has become one of the pioneer universities in Turkey which take the leading role in the process of internationalisation of Turkish Higher Education.

DEU-DESUM was awarded the “Institutional Accreditation Certificate” within the scope of the “2021 Institutional Accreditation Program” by the Higher Education Quality Council (YÖKAK) in June 2022 and the Institutional Accreditation Certificate was presented to our Rector by the Chairman of the YÖKAK at the ceremony held in July 2022. 

DEU-DESUM benefits largely from its geographical position as being located in the city of Izmir and being at the crossroads of Europe, Asia, Africa and Middle East. Izmir is called as the pearl of the Aegean with its mild Mediterranean climate, multi-cultural social life and strong economy. Izmir is the city of university students, artists, scientists and business people. It hosts six state universities and two private foundation universities. 

DEU-DESUM has 18 faculties involving the fields maritime, education, literature, science, fine arts, nursing, law, economics and administrative sciences, theology, business, architecture, engineering, medicine, veterinary, dentistry, tourism, sports sciences, phisical therapy and rehabilitation, 10 graduate schools and institutes, 1 conservatory, 2 schools, 6 vocational schools and 49 research and application centers. DEU-DESUM offers a lively scientific milieu with the total number of 3.196 academic staff including 716 Professors, 367 Associate Professors, 484 Dr. Faculty Members.

Prof. Dr. Ali Gul

Prof.Dr. Ali GUL is civil engineer and holds Ph.D. degree on hydraulics, hydrology and water resources. Dr. Gül has been working in the Civil Engineering Department of Dokuz Eylul University since 1997. In the period 2005-2008, he worked as National Expert and Country Desk Officer for Turkey at the European Environment Agency in Copenhagen, Denmark. His basic fields of research are GIS in water resources management, computer-based models of urban and rural watersheds, water resources planning, management, and environmental water assessments.

Prof. Dr. Gülay Onusluel Gul

Prof. Dr. Gülay Onusluel Gul is civil engineer with Ph.D on hydraulics, hydrology and water resources and has been working at the Civil Engineering Department of Dokuz Eylul University since 1997. Her basic fields of research are climate change, hydrologic/hydraulic and floodplain modeling, water resources planning and management, drought assessments, statistical hydrology, GIS, land use and land cover change dynamics. She worked as post-doctoral researcher at Technical University of Denmark between 2006 and 2008, and was involved in several projects supported by EU and national institutions.

Prof. Dr. Hülya Boyayacioglu

Prof. Dr. Hülya Boyayacioglu is an environmental engineer. She got her master degree from Resources Engineering program at Karlsruhe University in Germany. She was post-doctoral fellow at Helmholtz Center for Environmental Research, Magdeburg in Germany and University of Twente, Water Footprint Network in the Netherlands. Her research areas are water footprinting, water management, water and waste water treatment. Recently she has worked in several projects related to climate change and environmental impacts. Currently she is working as an academician at Dokuz Eylul University, Department of Environmental Engineering.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Cem P. Cetinkaya

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Cem P. Cetinkaya is civil engineer with Ph.D on hydraulics, hydrology and water resources. He has faculty position at the Civil Engineering Department of Dokuz Eylul University. His expertise areas include hydrologic simulations, GIS and remote sensing applications in water resources. Basic fields of research are stochastic time series analysis, monitoring network design, computer-based models of urban and rural watersheds, and water resources planning and management. Dr. Cetinkaya has been involved in several projects supported by EU and national institutions.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Filiz Barbaros

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Filiz Barbaros is environmental Engineer with Ph.D. on institutional support systems for environmental management and has been working in the Civil Engineering Department of Dokuz Eylul University Faculty of Engineering since 2002. She has expertise on water quality, water resources and environmental management and was involved in a number of research projects in the relevant areas, supported by EU, NATO, the British Council, IWMI, TUBITAK, DSI, the State Planning Agency and DEU.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sumeyra Duman

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sumeyra Duman has taken her PhD degree from Dokuz Eylul University Social Sciences Institute Business Administration Programme. She is currently working at Dokuz Eylul University Faculty of Business, Department of Business Administration. Her broad research interest areas are sustainability, consumer decision-making, behavioral economics.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Aysegul Ozgenc Aksoy

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Aysegul Ozgenc Aksoy received her M.Sc. on hydraulics, hydrology and water resources in 2002 and her Ph.D. on the same topic in 2008. She carried out research on groundwater at the Technical University of Berlin as part of her doctoral study. Dr. Ozgenc Aksoy worked as project engineer in a private company between 2000-2002, and then started to work as research assistant at the Civil Engineering Department, Hydraulics Division of Dokuz Eylul University. She has been acting as the assistant laboratory responsible for the Hydraulics Laboratory since 2013. Ayşegul Ozgenc Aksoy has more than 50 publications in Turkish and English mostly focused on experimental hydromechanics, groundwater flow and physical models. She worked as manager and researcher in research projects supported by various inter-/national funding mechanisms.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mustafa Dogan

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mustafa Dogan completed his Master's study in 2008 and Ph.D. study in 2013 at the Department of Civil Engineering, Division of Hydraulics-Hydrology and Water Resources at Dokuz Eylul University. He received the associate professorship title in 2017 and continued his studies at the Hydraulics laboratory of Dokuz Eylul University. Assoc. Dr. Mustafa DOĞAN has more than 50 publications published in Turkish and English languages on coastal hydrodynamics, experimental hydromechanics, hydro-meteorology and climate change.

Mert C. Gunacti

Mert C. Gunacti is civil Engineer with MSc. degree and has an ongoing Ph.D study on hydraulics - hydrology and water resources management. He has been research assistant at the Civil Engineering Department at Dokuz Eylul University since 2017. His basic fields of research are hydrologic simulation, GIS and remote sensing applications in water resources, water resources planning and management.
